Advice for a pleasant journey
Verona and northern Italy towns in general, are very safe places, much safer that many other Italian tourist towns and areas such as Milan, Rome or Naples. You can enjoy your staying, your sightseeing and your shopping, without bothering about pick pockets, robberies, etc. Moreover the historic center of most small historical towns are mainly pedestrian precinct so you don't even have to care too much about cars and bikes.
Nevertheless here are some tips to help you avoid trouble that can happen when traveling in Italy:
-
In some areas of the city center, the traffic is limited. Although they might look pedestrian precinct, some streets are often open to few cars and bikes with special pass. Italians tend to have a quite, let's say, rough way to drive. Always be very careful when you cross a street even if the traffic light is green!
-
Before sitting in a bar or restaurant check the prices in the list that must be placed outside. In the same bar, prices vary greatly if you take your drink at the counter, sitting inside or at a table outside, especially if in a nice square.
-
If you hire a tourist guide, or any other extra service such as taxi, drivers, tickets for events, etc, through the reception of your hotel, keep in mind that guides, taxi drivers and touts, tip hotel staff to be called first (it happens even more frequently in top class hotels), so you will probably have to pay 20-30% and even more, than standard rates.
