Vicenza Urban Villas

Villa Valmarana ai Nani
On the hills surrounding Vicenza, the town of Palladio, you will find two amazing architecture masterpieces: Villa Almerico Capra, better known as La Rotonda (the Round one) and villa Valmarana ai Nani.
The two villas are exceptions among Veneto villas, since they are not directly linked to an agricultural land. They were in fact residences of noble Vicenza families who looked for peace and quietness just outside town.
La Rotonda
Unlike the usual Veneto villa, which was primarily a center for the supervision of an economic and agricultural system, villa Almerico is a sub-urban villa, built for the people who lived in it, to enjoy the beautiful panoramic view from the top of the hill on which is built. A beautiful ideal abstraction of Andrea Palladio who realized in it his idea of perfect harmony and proportion.
Villa Valmarana ai Nani
It was built by Francesco Muttoni and represents the architectural evolution of the Veneto villa after Palladio. Inside the architectural masterpiece you will find the pictorial masterpiece by Giovan Battista Tiepolo and his son Gian Domenico one of the highest example of rococo painting. The villa took its name from the 17 statues representing dwarfs on the wall surrounding the Italian garden. The legend says that the parents of a dwarf princess didn't want her to know her diversity and built this villa to close her there together with dwarfs servants. One day, a prince managed to enter the villa, the princess seeing him, realized her condition and killed herself. As a punishment, the servants were transformed in stone statues.
